Sulfur Acne

Sulfur acne treatment. A natural approach in the fight against acne
- Sulfur, (sodium sulfacetamide), functions as an antibiotic on the skin surface. When applied, it kills current bacteria and prevent new bacteria from forming. While used in the treatment and management of acne, sulfur is also used to treat dermatitis and rosacea.
- Sulfur has been used as a skin treatment for centuries. In fact, it’s been used for over a thousand years as a means of eliminating acne bacteria and improving the condition of the skin. Sulfur actively works to dry up excess oil on the skin and to help unclog pores. You can currently get sulfur acne treatments over-the-counter or as a prescription under the names Sulfacet-R and Novacet.
- Like most acne treatment agents, sulfur does carry with it a few side effects. The most common side effects are generally mild and include drying of the skin, irritation, itching or flaking. The treated area may be a bit red for a few days. This is minor, however, and usually does not require that you discontinue use of the treatment or seek medical attention.
- More unpleasant side effects can occur as well, however. These side effects are typically the result of an allergic reaction and require immediate medical attention. Signs of an allergic reaction to sulfur include swollen face, lips, tongue or throat, hives, rashes, fever or painful joints.
- While sodium sulfacetamide or sulfur is available over-the-counter, it’s a wise idea to talk to your doctor before using it. This way, you can determine if you have an allergy to things that contain sulfur and you can figure out which acne treatment is the best course of action for you and your skin.
Sulfur Acne Treatment
Sulfur has been a major ingredient in acne treatment products for quite some time. According to history books, the romans used to use it for curing dandruff and exzema! These days benzoyl peroxide and salyclic acid have replaced sulfur as the prime acne fighting component. However, sulfur acne treatments can still be found on the marketplace and is still very desired by people who prefer a more natural approach when treating their acne.
